more years. we know how stephen colbert feels. he's not taking it well. that clip later in the show. first let's get to the news here at 30 rock in new york city. for obvious reasons we were locked in on the presidential election for the last couple days. hundreds of thousands of americans remained during that time without power during an unseasonably cold spell in the northeast. yesterday, to add to the damage left by hurricane sandy, a nor'easter blew through the east coast dumping snow and rain on a region that's barely begun to dig out from sandy. there are new pictures from staten island. several inches of wet snow are threatening to topple already weakened trees. power was knocked out to some 60,000 homes in new york and new jersey overnight, many of which had just seen service restored after more and a week in the dark. passenger trains grind to a halt and at least 1300 flights kept at the gates of airports. we'll have a live report from

one of the areas hit hardest by the storm in just a moment. first we want to go right to bill karins for a look at what's happening. bill, tell us more about this storm. >> there's been some good and some bad. the snow and the amounts were much higher-than-expected. that was the bad part of it. they did bring down some trees. additional power outages in new jersey and connecticut. the good with the storm is that the storm surge and as far as the beach erosion and the waves on the coast of the jersey shore were not as bad as expected. that's good. we didn't do a lot of additional damage in the areas hit hard by sandy. this almost looks like a tropical storm. you can see it's wound up south of nantucket right now. the worst of the winds is definitely down along cape cod. that's where it will continue this morning. look at the wind gusts, 50 to 60 miles per hour from provincetown down to nantucket. it will get better as the day goes on across all of connecticut, massachusetts and rhode island.

the worst is over with. the storm is beginning to wrap in some warmer air off the ocean. all the big city temperatures are above freezing and the roads are beginning to improve. as the cars get on them this morning, a lot of them have been treated, so the roads will be improving. a lot of the schools have two or three-hour delays because they know the temperatures will go into the 40s later today and the roads will dramatically improve. don't want to forget our friends dealing with a big winter storm in montana and idaho. a blizzard is under way. that will continue today and tomorrow. that one is not heading across the u.s. looks like the east coast gets a big break. we should be in the 50s by the weekend. >> we could use a break. bill karins, a busy man over the last couple weeks. turning now to nbc's danielle lee standing by live in trenton, new jersey. danielle, you could hear it in governor christie's voice yesterday. i don't know how much more that place can take. >> reporter: a little battle-weary if you think about

it. we're waking up to a couple inches of snow. right here it's turning into slush. that's what's going to be the concern this morning now that the worst of this storm is really past. the roads are wet so we'll be encountering slippery roads which could mean accidents. we've seen crews, snowplows out all morning monitoring the roads. when you talk, though, about the hundreds of thousands of people still recovering from hurricane sandy, this storm was the last thing that many of them needed. more than 100,000 people lost power. some of those people had just gotten their power back on. that forced many people to go seek shelters, warm places to ride out this, i've got to tell you, very cold storm as winds gust up to 60 miles per hour. for the thousands of crews working around the clock on the recovery, this is a setback. it's more work, more cleanup they're going to have to take on to try to get these communities along the northeast back to some kind of normalcy, a normalcy we

know will take several months. i can tell you many people here are hanging on to the forecast that says it's going to warm up and dry up for the next couple days. they are ready to focus on this recovery. live in trenton, new jersey, danielle lee. wil will willie, back to you. >> thanks so much, danielle. we turn to politics. two days removed from the election. while we know who won the presidency, we still don't know which way florida voted, not that it matters. with less than a point separating the two candidates, florida will be forced into a recount under state law if the margin drops below .5%. some races were decided yesterday including montana's senate race where jon tester held off danny raider. hidity heitkamp won by fewer than 3,000 votes, but she's been declared the winner. elizabeth warren's victory in

massachusetts helped democrats increase their majority in the senate. it was also a big election for women in general. tuesday saw the election of five new female senators bringing the total in that body to 20. that is a record. for the first time, the state of new hampshire has an all female delegation including the governor, congress and both senators. new peaks of campaign spending. in iowa, the cost per electoral vote $12.3 million. in virginia almost $12 million and nearly $11 million was spent 18 times over in the fight for ohio. on wednesday mitt romney supporters were vocal about the final outcome including top surrogate governor chris christie of new jersey. >> i'm extraordinarily disappointed. i put a lot of time and effort into the mitt romney campaign from last october going to new hampshire to endorse him through to my last trip for him the

friday before the storm in north carolina. i was surprised that it ended as quickly as it did. but that's the way it goes. people decide elections. so my job as an elected official is to move forward after that. i'm not goings to spend a lot of time looking in my rear view mirror. the new jersey governor remained defiant in the face of some criticism he's taken from corners of his party for praising president obama's help in the response to hurricane sandy. >> i'm a guy who tells the truth all the time. and if the president of the united states does something good, i was going to say so and give him credit for it. but it doesn't take away for a minute the fact that i was the first governor in america to endorse mitt romney, that i traveled literally tens of thousands of miles for him, raised tens of millions of dollars for him and worked harder i think than any other surrogate in america other than

paul ryan. hours after his re-election win, president obama dove right back into politics that loom over the fiscal cliff debate. he and his family returned to washington where the president called congressional leaders to talk about finding bipartisan solutions to reducing the debt, cut middle class taxes and create jobs. house speaker john boehner said under the right conditions republicans would consider new sources of raising revenue, but only if the president took an inclusive approach. >> mr. president, this is your moment. we're ready to be led, not as democrats or republicans, but as americans. we want you to lead, not as a liberal or conservative, but as president of the united states of america. we want you to succeed. let's challenge ourselves to find the common ground that has eluded us. let's rise above the dysfunction and do the right thing together for our country. >> senate majority leader harry

reid said he was open to bargaining. >> we can achieve big things if we work together. that's what the american people said last night in a big way. i'm going to do everything within my power to be as conciliatory as possible. i want to work together, but i want everyone to also understand you can't push us around. we want to work together. >> a lot of people on both sides saying the right things in the days after the election. we'll see how long it lasts and if it leads to a deal on this important question of the fiscal cliff. senator reid told republican leaders he expected to raise the debt ceiling again if need be and a shutdown of the government will not work. now to business, wall street responded to president obama's re-electi re-election, focusing on the fiscal cliff. the dow dropped more than 300 points, 312 to be exact, its largest point and percentage decline in nearly a year, down

about 2.4%. let's go to cnbc's geoff cutmore life in london. what should we read into the market? >> good morning, willie. for once it makes sense for europe not to be the catalyst for the market decline. the fall on the dow i think took a few people by surprise. the early running on the results was that the secity trade in europe was higher. when we got into that u.s. session, it started to fade away. i think people focused once again on this impasse we've got over the resolution of the fiscal cliff, and if it doesn't get dealt with, there are $7 trillion worth of taxes to be imposed and public spending cuts to be introduced which would slow growth for the u.s. economy. so that -- putting some pressure now on the politicians to get their act together here. just one word for knows who are in the market, wondering what happens here. we've seen four major declines like this on the day after

unpopular after an awkward visit this summer. in the middle east, there's hope that president obama will embrace the israeli-palestinian peace process in his second term the way he embraced the arab spring in his first. >> he has a chance to create a legacy. he's relieved now and freed from having to worry about getting re-elected. >> reporter: but the president's re-election drew a cool response from israeli prime minister netanyahu. the two men are not close. a second term comes with a world of problems. >> for president obama, the most dangerous country in the world in his first term and his second term will be pakistan. >> reporter: that's where bin laden was hiding and it remains a safe haven for militant extremists. syria is imploding and threatens to spread into a regional war. syria is hoping the president will engage. the euro is in crisis bs, greeks

rioting again and, of course, iran still pursuing nuclear ambitions despite crippling sanctions. many worry it could trigger another war. we turn to sports now. the finalists have been announced. mike trout is in the bunch vying for a.l.mvp, he's joined by triple crown winner miguel cabrera, adrian beltre, josh hamilton and robby cano. ryan braun against headley, mccutchen, molina and posey. mets knuckleballer r.a. dickey, the old man he's up against david price of the vanderbilt university and jered weaver. mike trout also a near lock for rookie of the year.

the winners announced next week beginning on monday. in the nfl it turns out mark sanchez and tim tebow aren't the only new york jets that current nfl players think are overrated. in a recent poll conducted by the sporting news, nfl players overwhelmingly chose ryan as the most overrated coach in the league. he received 35 of 103 votes cast. his closest competition, patriots coach bill belichick got half as many with 16. in a similar poll regarding overrated players, tebow and sanchez came in at 1-2 respectively. at his press conference yesterday coach ryan addressed his new distinction. >> my first thought was, i looked and i saw who was second. i thought, i finally beat belichick. i knew it would take time, but i finally got him. yeah, man. golly, like it hasn't been a

tough enough year. the overrated thing, it is what it is. i just want to be, at the end of the year, we'll see who is overrated. >> ryan also came in third behind bucks coach as who players would least like to play for. the jets head to seattle to play the seahawks. rookie quarterback andrew luck became the latest member of the indianapolis colts to shave higgs head in support of head coach chuck pagano who is undergoing treatment for leukemia. this picture was tweeted yesterday. nearly three dozen players have shaved their heads. they've taken to wearing orange gloves to raise awareness about leukemia. during games. pagan know was diagnose back on september 26th, three games into his first season. the colts are playing pretty darn well after a terrible season last year in indianapolis. coming up at the top of the
